With the benefit of a separate two bedroom staff house and a large salt-water swimming pool, this wonderful home offers around 15,000 sq. ft (1,394 sq. m) of flexible, habitable space.
The consecrated chapel precedes the house and probably dates from the 14th Century.
There are some interesting architectural features which give clues as to its history: evidence of the Knights Templar, a Celtic stained glass window and an unusual cross depicting spearheads and a four-leafed clover.
There is a stone cross in the park that bears the same emblem as the one seen on the ceiling of the chapel.
Previously owned by generations of the de Meoule family and then the family of the renowned French film director Jean-Jacques Annaud, the construction of Mas de Bronzet is believed to have been around 1685, during the reign of Louis XIV and the music of Couperin and Rameau and, indeed, the birth year of JS Bach & Handel. An original iron fire-back in the dining room is inscribed with the date 1687, which the present owners believe was probably the year in which the mas was completed.
The main feature of the extensive grounds is the beautiful park with many mature, specimen trees, but there is also an old avenue of plane trees, an olive grove, 2 paddocks, a stone fountain and some old stone walls. There are a further 6 hectares of land, currently planted by a local farmer (on a year by year basis) with organic cereal crops. The land is rich and lends itself to vines and fruit trees, but would be equally ideal for equestrian pursuits.
The present Comte de Meoule visited the mas recently and recalled some fascinating family history, illustrated by features in the chapel and the Maltese cross and the “Croix de Camargue” on the main entrance gates.
The de Meoule family sold the mas in 1990 to the Jean-Jacques Annaud family, who undertook a most extensive and sympathetic restoration over some 2 years or so.
Mas de Bronzet is now, therefore, an elegantly preserved and authentic mas, fully modernised yet retaining the original, pure architectural features of its time and totally in keeping with the centennial park by which it is surrounded.
Today, the mas retains a gracious and mysterious sense of quiet nobility and, embraced by its glorious park, it remains secluded and in many ways lost in time – conjuring up images of Alain-Fournier’s haunting novel, Le Grand Meaulnes.
“Croix de Camargue”
Also called ‘the Guardian Cross’ the Croix de Camargue is made of a Latin Cross, whose three upper points are trident-shaped plus an Anchor and a Heart. The Cross symbolises Faith, the Anchor Hope and the Heart Charity.
Centrally located within the heart of the golden triangle - between Avignon, Arles and St. Rémy de Provence/Les Alpilles.
